To be honest, some people think that Czech food is not very good. The truth is that not many visitors have a chance to try traditional delicious Czech food.

Either they don’t want to try different food and they end up eating in the Italian restaurant in Prague or they just don’t know where and what to eat in Prague.

Now back to our Czech food guide as the question you are probably asking yourself is:  Where and what I can eat in Prague?

In this post, I will explain to you first the traditional Czech dishes which you can’t miss.

Then we focus on beer and what you can eat while drinking beer as without this delicious drink, we probably won’t survive.

After the beer section, we go to discover some typical Czech sweet dishes and we end up with my personal recommendation for the best places on where to eat in Prague.

So let’s start with the traditional Czech dishes you definitely have to try.

Traditional Czech Food

Traditional Czech cuisine has many different dishes but the base is meat, meat and meat. And of course potatoes. So basically, if we make it short, it’s all about meat and potatoes.

Let me explain some of the most traditional dishes from Czech cuisine which should be on your list when travelling to Prague.

In our personal opinion, we should never forget that Barcelona is the World capital of delicious food.

Svícková (Beef sirloin with cream sauce and bread dumplings)

Probably the most typical Czech meal and you will find it at most menus in any Czech restaurant.

To be honest, I really love this dish, especially if it is prepared by my grandmother. There is nothing better than homemade bread dumplings with this delicious cream sauce and slowly cooked beef meat.

Our tip: When we travel we always make sure to have travel insurance. Our personal recommendation is WORLD NOMADS as they have great support and health coverage around the world. And don’t worry if you forget about it, you can purchase the insurance during your trip!

Knedlo, Vepro, Zelo (Dumplings, Saurekraut, Pork loin)

Another classic must eat in Prague. I am sure you will find this classic Czech dish almost everywhere. It is delicious and quite heavy, so I would not recommend it during a hot summer.

Basically, it is pork loin accompanied by pickled and sour cabbage, either red or white cabbage, and bread dumplings.

And of course, don’t forget the beer as this dish should be accompanied by cold Czech beer.

Koleno (Pork Knuckle)

Pork knuckle is a famous dish not only in the Czech Republic but also in Germany and other European countries.

My favourite is definitely pork knuckle marinated in dark Czech beer. There are different varieties of this dish and it is usually served with potato dumplings or bread accompanied by fresh radish dip.

Guláš (Goulash)

Another dish which you should not miss in Czech restaurants. Usually with pork or beef meat accompanied with bread dumplings.

You can find this dish in other European countries like Hungary or Poland.

Smažený sýr (Fried Cheese)

Fried cheese is just a classic! It is definitely not healthy but I just love it (don’t hate me:))

Fried cheese consists of deep-fried Edam or Gouda cheese, with french fries and tartar sauce.

Chlebícky (Open-faced sandwiches)

Mini sandwiches which have a long tradition in the Czech Republic. There are many varieties of chlebícky, so you can easily choose the best one for you.

Food to eat with Czech Beer

You might already know that the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world. Yes, we just love beer!

The funny thing is that in most pubs, the beer is cheaper than water so the decision is clear.

Not many Prague visitors know that in every pub with Czech beer, they also serve delicious food. Here I will mention a few typical Czech meals which you have to eat in the pub accompanied by cold Czech beer.

Burty na pivu (Sausages marinated in Beer)

As you already see from the name, it is classic sausage marinated usually in dark beer, you can’t miss it.

Bramboráky (Potato Pancakes)

Yes, just love it! It is a bit heavy and usually, you will find them fried unless you make them at home in the oven.

Utopenci (Pickled Sausage)

Basically, pickled sausages marinated in spices and onion. You can usually find them at the bar in a huge glass jar.

It is a delicious snack during the summer as they are not so heavy. If you eat only one:)

Nákladaný hermelín (Pickled Cheese)

Delicious marinated Czech cheese (hermelín) similar to Camembert. Usually, you find them right next to Utopenci at the bar. If you are foodie, this is something I eat every time I come to Prague.

Czech Sweet Food

I was talking a lot about meat, dumplings and potatoes, but Czech food also offers delicious sweet meals which can be served as desserts or as a main dish. The Czech sweet food is definitely something to eat in Prague as you might be surprised by some of the delicatessens.

Sladké knedlíky (Fruit-filled Dumplings)

The classic Czech meal which can be made from a different kind of dough and filled with a variety of fruit like strawberries, blueberries and plums (my favourite are of course from my grandmother).

When you walk in Prague city centre, you might see small Trdelník shops everywhere so this is your chance to try this yummy Czech sweet food.

Štrudl (Strudel)

You will find a similar recipe of strudel in Germany and Austria.

We make Czech strudel with puff pastry filled with apples, cinnamon, raisins and walnuts.

The puff pastry can be easily bought in a supermarket however each grandmother has own recipe for the homemade strudel puff pastry at home.
