Here are the best burgers in Iceland, which we have all tried and highly recommend:

DJ GRILL – best burgers in Iceland

The first place we recommend, DJ Grill, is located in the north of the island, in Akureyri, the second most important city in Iceland.

This burger joint’s interior reminds us of the American diners we Europeans are used to seeing in movies, which fascinate us so much. In addition to this American touch, some Icelandic details make it a unique place.

However, what really matters are the burgers, which are one of the best we’ve tried in this country. Most of the ingredients are local, such as the cheeses, bread, and, of course, the meat.

What makes these burgers unique is their cooking, done on a grid grill (I think gas-powered), which gives them that smoky/burnt flavor that makes me salivate just thinking about it.

The menu has a great selection, and in addition to that, you can order the full meal, which includes the incomparable fries and soda of your choice, definitely a good compromise for quality/money.

VOGAFJÓS FARM RESTAURANT

Where could you eat one of the best hamburgers in Iceland if not inside a farm/restaurant?

Yes, you read it correctly. This time, we’re heading to the northeast of the island, specifically to the famous Lake Mývatn (where we lived for an entire summer), home to the Vogafjós restaurant and this incredible burger.

As I mentioned, the restaurant is located within the same cattle farm; you can see the cows through the windows, and if you wish, even milk them or pet them (depending on the time). Although the menu is varied with traditional Icelandic dishes, what stands out to me is the burger.

Let me just say that all the elements and ingredients that accompany this dish are homemade, from the bread to the wedge potatoes, which are oven-baked instead of fried. Naturally, the meat, as you can imagine, is locally produced.

I promise you, in all my years of traveling, I had never eaten a burger so locally sourced; the “Farm to Table” concept doesn’t get any better than this. It’s worth a visit, in addition to great food, you’ll find a breathtaking landscape.

KRÖST – best burgers in Iceland

If you visit Iceland, in most cases, you’ll have to pass through the capital, Reykjavik, at least once, and there’s a high chance you’ll need to eat here.

So, I wonder, why not enjoy one of the best hamburgers in Iceland when you’ll be visiting the capital of the island?

Kröst is a casual restaurant located in downtown Reykjavik, precisely inside the Hlemmur Mathöll food hall, one of the best food halls in the city.

What we found here is a sensational burger—juicy, well-crafted, and balanced—definitely a dish that makes you say it’s worth coming back for again and again. Based on the way the meat is cooked and its juiciness, I’d guess that part of the process involves sous-vide cooking.

Probably, followed by a quick sear on the grill, which not only gives the meat a uniform color but leaves it flawless. It’s worth noting that not only the meat but all the components of this creation are balanced and proportioned just right, giving this dish (often considered just cheap fast food) a delicious, incredible taste worthy of the finest gourmet dishes.
