5 Hidden Gems in Iceland Worth Exploring
This post will describe some of the hidden gems Iceland has to offer. It is based on our personal experience, as we lived there for almost a year. I hope you enjoy reading it.
Iceland, the mystical and remote land of ice and fire, is one of the most desired destinations for nature lovers. It is an incredible island, full of adventures and magical places. From waterfalls and volcanoes to craters, Iceland offers a wide range of options for tourists visiting the country.
However, many of them, whether due to economic reasons or time constraints, tend to focus on the “must-see” attractions, leaving aside many of the wonders this island has to offer.
Below, I present to you 5 hidden gems of Iceland that, in our experience, are worth visiting and exploring.

NAUTHÓLSVÍK GEOTHERMAL BEACH
Did you know that there is a white sand beach in Iceland?
Located in the capital, Reykjavik, this artificial beach features geothermal water that makes it the perfect place to swim even on the coldest (summer) days.
This beach is an incredible spot to relax and enjoy the sunny days that this land sometimes offers. I consider it one of the hidden gems in Iceland, because it’s very unlikely you’ll see tourists here, although it’s true that on very hot days, locals come here to relax. The nearby geothermal pools and hot baths allow you to freely dip into the seawater, helping your skin and mind relax even further.
HAUGANES HOT TUBS
Hauganes is a small fishing village located in northern Iceland, not far from the city of Akureyri.
Many tourists don’t know about this place because it’s not on the island’s main road, the N1. Still, what I’m about to tell you transforms it into a true hidden gem of Iceland. In this village of just over 100 inhabitants, you’ll find hot tubs right in front of the sea. Although the place is quite rough and rustic, it’s a visual treasure, as the landscape is breathtaking.
Jumping into Iceland’s cold (freezing) sea and then entering one of these tubs to relax is an indescribable experience.
It’s one of the spots in Iceland that touched my heart because of its beauty, and I’ve decided to share it with you. Besides this, in the same village, you’ll find a restaurant specializing in fish, offering, in our opinion, one of the best fish and chips on the entire island.

ÁSBYRGI – hidden gems Iceland
The first time I visited this hidden gem of Iceland, while touring the Diamond Circle in the north of the island, I realized how unpredictable, vast, and truly beautiful the island is.
I write this because, after seeing a lot of snow near the powerful Dettifoss waterfall, and just a few kilometers away from it, I came across Ásbyrgi, a super green canyon full of vegetation. This canyon is surrounded by immense natural beauty and also many Nordic legends. One of these legends says it was created by the horseshoe of Odin’s horse. Ásbyrgi is a place I recommend seeing during your trip to Iceland because it’s a peaceful spot and perfect for hiking.

HOFDI – Hidden gems in Iceland
Lake Mývatn has a lot to offer, and many times, tourists pass through Miss Höfði, a true hidden gem of Iceland. Höfði is a small park that offers incredible displays that only nature here can provide.
In addition to the stunning panoramic views, the lava formations in the crystal-clear, calm water of this lake give a magical and almost supernatural feeling, especially at sunset. During our days off, we often visited this park and could appreciate how its natural beauty and landscapes changed with the seasons; a unique experience for nature lovers.
MÓÐIR JÖRÐ – VALLANES ORGANIC FARM
Anyone who thinks that only proteins are eaten in Iceland is wrong. This land and its evolution are constantly incorporating and organizing more and more the cultivation of plant-based products with hydroponic methods.
One such example and for us a hidden gem in Iceland, is the Vallanes Organic Farm – Móðir Jörð, located very close to Egilsstaðir, in the east of the island.
This organic farm is a paradise for lovers of vegetarian, vegan, and sustainable food. Known for its barley production (which is sold in many stores), it offers other products from its own land, which are transformed by expert and skilled hands into delicious dishes and a unique experience amidst nature.
