We have already written several food articles about this city, but we have never talked about the most important meal of the day. This time, we want you to discover our favorite places to have breakfast in Barcelona.

What is the best breakfast in the world?
We travel a lot, and over the years, we have observed that what is eaten for breakfast can vary greatly from one country to another. In Asia, breakfast often consists of soups or rice; in North America, it’s eggs and pancakes; and in Italy, for example, it’s usually a croissant (cornetto) with coffee or cappuccino.
Here in Spain, the day starts with coffee, either espresso, cortado, or café con leche, accompanied by a piece of classic pastries (ensaimada, caña de cabello de Angel, or napolitana) or a sandwich filled with various options, including cold cuts, cheese, or a Spanish omelette.
Barcelona’s locals tend to have breakfast quite late, frequently around 10 or 10:30 AM, and at that time, it’s common to see bars crowded with people sipping coffee and enjoying toast with grated tomatoes (tomato tomate rallado), along with a Spanish omelette or some good Iberian cold cuts.
It’s also quite common to have a sweet breakfast with churros and a cup of hot chocolate, especially on weekends when people have more time.
Our experience…
We lived in Barcelona for 12 years, and throughout this time, we have maintained our morning breakfast routines. Despite that, as time has passed, we have added other customs to our diet. We like to vary, try different things, and have a diverse breakfast.
In this article, we have added what we consider to be the best places to have breakfast in the Catalan capital. You’ll find a bit of everything, from delicious croissants to carefully crafted toast or crispy, still-warm focaccia.
No matter what your breakfast preferences are, here you will find the best spot to satisfy your culinary desires and routines. Having breakfast in Barcelona will feel just like having breakfast at home.
Here are nine places for you to explore, enjoy your reading, and enjoy delightful breakfasts:

Where to eat Breakfast in Barcelona
1) Tartela – Breakfast in Barcelona
This place is a paradise for enjoying delicious cakes and pastries near Plaza España.
We discovered this gem thanks to a friend’s recommendation, and it has remained on our personal list of go-to spots for delightful breakfasts in Barcelona ever since.
The establishment is beautifully decorated, and their entire menu is meticulously crafted and delicious, with a good selection of vegetarian options. The owner ensures that no artificial flavors are used and that all the products are made with the finest ingredients.
One of the great things about this place is that you can savor an authentic Catalan breakfast (the classic corner bar type) with toast and flutes, yet the quality is truly impressive.
Tip: We also recommend Tartela if you’re looking to enjoy a scrumptious brunch in Barcelona.
You can find the address for Tartela here.
In our last visit to Barcelona we discovered (saw) that there is a new branch near Plaza de Sants “Tartela Loft” ;.)
2. Manso’s café– Breakfast in Barcelona
Manso’s Café in Barcelona is located in the Sant Antoni neighborhood, just a few steps away from the beautiful Plaza España.
It’s a café inspired by Sweden, and their menu features many pastries and sweets from this country, including their incredible and addictive cinnamon rolls.
We’ve had breakfast here many times due to their excellent coffee and delicious homemade cinnamon rolls. But let us share a secret with you: We have a weakness for their carrot cake.
Manso’s Café is a fantastic spot to enjoy a delightful breakfast or brunch in Barcelona.
Tip: They have also opened another store with an interesting concept called Café Fiket; you can find the address here.
If you’re interested in the brunch scene, here’s a list of our favorite brunch places in Barcelona.
3. Granja Petitbo– Breakfast in Barcelona
Another establishment with a Nordic flair, Granja Petitbo has been offering quality products and dishes to its customers in a bright and cozy space for years.
Their service ranges from breakfast to dinner, and their menu offers a bit of everything, from delicious salads and freshly made eggs to tempting sandwiches and pastries.
We believe that the key to their success lies in their variety, combined with the fact that everything they offer is of incredible quality.
Since 2012, Granja Petitbo has been providing locals and tourists with some of the best breakfasts in Barcelona, and whether you fall into either of these categories, you absolutely cannot miss out.
Currently, there are two locations: one at Passeig Sant Joan 82 and the other at Calle Mallorca 194.
Our tip: When we travel we always make sure to have travel insurance. Our personal recommendation is Truetraveller as they have great support and health coverage around the world. And don’t worry if you forget about it, you can purchase the insurance during your trip!
4. Trigo pan y postres– Breakfast in Barcelona
Trigo BCN is located in the Poblenou neighborhood and is one of the best places in the city to have breakfast or buy Italian-style pastries and bread. The sweet offerings are also varied and delicious, and the owner, Luigi, and his team constantly change the offerings based on the season and the best that the market has to offer.
Trigo is the perfect place to enjoy a slice of homemade focaccia, a caprese cake, or a sandwich made with their freshly baked bread and feel transported to Italy for a moment.
For more information, you can read our complete article about Trigo and what they offer.
5. Cooofe– Breakfast in Barcelona
Having lived in the Sant Antoni neighborhood for many years, we visited this place for a simple reason: the quality-price ratio for breakfast in Barcelona is unbeatable at Cooofe.
Cooofe offers a varied and comprehensive menu, from croissants and typical Italian pastries to slices of bread and a Spanish omelette (tortilla de patata). They also have a corner where they prepare fresh fruit juices on the spot. The coffee is fantastic and is the crown jewel of this place; it’s hard to find such good coffee at an affordable price in a touristy city like Barcelona.
Tip: For those who enjoy savory breakfasts, they serve delicious pizzas, toasts, and sandwiches that are super tasty at a more than reasonable price.
6. Hofmann – Breakfast in Barcelona
Hofmann is a famous bakery located in El Born. Here, you can find some of the best croissants in the entire city (our favorites are the mascarpone and raspberry ones).
They also offer many types of cakes and delicious pastries. In addition to the croissants, we recommend trying their tiramisu, which is very well-made and delicious (and this comes from Simone, who is Italian).
There are no tables inside the main shop, so it’s more for takeout. Despite that, you’ll find a small corner inside where you can enjoy all the delights they offer for your upcoming breakfast in Barcelona.
They also opened another location on Av. de Pau Casals in the upper part of Barcelona.
7. Takashi Ochiai– Breakfast in Barcelona
Takashi Ochiai opened his bakery in Barcelona in 1983. The Japanese pastry chef, in addition to classic Spanish and French pastries and baked goods, also gradually introduced Oriental products such as Mochis or Dorayaki.
There’s ample space inside the shop to enjoy a delicious breakfast in Barcelona, with incredible croissants or whatever else you fancy to start your day off right. They also offer some outdoor tables if you enjoy having your breakfast in the open air.
Tip: You have to try the croissants; they’re remarkable!
Our Tip: Wise is a great card when you’re traveling to a country with a different currency than yours or need to control your spending. Through a simple app you can monitor your movements and easily top up your account
8. Escribà– Breakfast in Barcelona
Christian Escribà is one of the most renowned pastry artists in Catalonia and one of the most recognized in all of Spain.
He comes from a long pastry tradition, and currently, you can find several shops or outlets in Barcelona.
Along with his wife, Patricia Schmidt, they have turned this venture into the perfect place to enjoy a quality breakfast or dessert.
The sugar decorations on cakes and pastries are true edible works of art, and it’s worth visiting the store just to see them. In their location on Gran Via, in addition to the bakery, they have a spacious area where you can have breakfast or enjoy some of their incredible and delicious creations at any time of the day.
We recommend Escribà if you want to have a breakfast experience at a certain gastronomic level in Barcelona.
9. La Pastisseria Barcelona– Breakfast in Barcelona
La Pastisseria Barcelona is owned by Juan Maria, a young pastry chef who is known for his great skills in creating incredible cakes and exceptional pastries.
If you’re interested in learning more about him, Juan Maria won the award for Best Pastry Chef in the World in 2011. He even wrote a remarkable book called “Sweetology” which, in our opinion, is one of the best pastry books that exists (in fact, we have it in our collection).
In his pastry shop, there are some tables where you can enjoy your breakfast in Barcelona with some of the best pastries and cakes in the city.
If you’re interested in visiting this bakery, here’s the address for you.
