But what happens with Christmas celebrations if you are a digital nomad and travel the world?

We know that having the freedom to travel and see the world while working is priceless. Everyone wants this and in a certain way it is a privilege to live this kind of life. However, we are also human beings, we have feelings and sometimes we miss being with family and friends, especially during times like Christmas and New Year.

An old Chinese saying (or it’s international :-)) mentions, “everything heals with time”, and for us who travel and have lived outside our homes for many years, we think that it is partly true. Christmas digital nomad

We can tell you one thing based on our experience, over the time you get used to the situation. You know that it would be nice to spend Christmas with your family, but for whatever reason (work or distance) you won’t be able to do it. Maybe you will feel sad or hurt especially when it’s your first Christmas abroad without your family and friends.

We know the feelings that you can have, because in the past we have experienced it, but now we no longer see it as difficult as the first years. It kind of became normal, and that’s why we decided to write this post to help you celebrate the best Christmas away from home as a digital nomad.

1. Digital community -Christmas digital nomad

The first advice we can give you is to use your digital nomad skills (we mean PC and internet:)) and remember that you are not the only one who is far from home for Christmas. Since you probably know in advance if you will spend the Christmas holidays abroad or not, try to find a community of digital nomads with the same issue´ as you.

Search for groups of expats or digital nomads on social networks (like Facebook groups) who live in the same area as you, surely they would be happy to have a good time with new people and not feel totally alone during Christmas parties.

Another tip that we can give you is to stay in places that are more frequented by travelers, such as hostels with bed dormitories where it is easier to find people who will spend Christmas with you.

Whether we go, to the beach or to the mountains, on a day trip or for several months, we always carry this incredible product with us.

The portable water filter is an essential product on our trips, as it is sustainable, useful and super small, a real joy. Click here for more information!

2. Connect with friends and family – christmas digital nomad

As a digital nomad, you probably have online meetings all the time so you are more than aware of all the new technologies and applications that exist on the market.

So why not use your skills to connect with your family and friends more often during the holiday season?

We know from personal experience that some of our family members don’t know how to make a Zoom call or connect via Google Meet. On the other hand, you are an expert in the field so you can easily teach them.

This way you can teach them something new and you also spend more time with them. We assure you that a video call will make you feel less alone and is decisively better than a simple call without a camera. If you think about it, it will be fun to see your grandparents, or uncles on a video call with you. Don’t you think? 🙂

3. Remote place but not totally remote

If you like traveling and discovering new places around the world and adventure is in your DNA, you probably don’t think about being connected all the time.

If this is your case, you may think that you can go to any remote place and spend Christmas there. It might be a good idea, but since you are reading this post you probably feel homesick and you want some advice.

We do not recommend going to very remote places if you feel homesick. Firstly, because you will surely will not have a good internet connection (and you will not be able to use tip n.2) and secondly, because it is difficult to find an expat community or digital nomads in the middle of a jungle or on a desert island (and you won’t be able to use tip n.1).

3rd Tip for digital nomads at Christmas aka Remote place

If you are not affected by the distance from your hometown and you like adventure, skip the first two points and opt in for a desert island or other remote place. They probably won’t have a Christmas tree, but if you miss it, you can always decorate a tropical tree with coconuts and bananas as an alternative and enjoy Merry Christmas. 4. Get yourself a gift – christmas digital nomad

It might be quite an obvious thing that we usually forget to do, but buying yourself a gift helps to ease the pain and the distance. On top of it, it makes you happy:)

Our tip is to avoid big and heavy things, not because you don’t need them, but because your back will thank you (we also imagine that you don’t want to add more useless things to your backpack/suitcase). Instead, get yourself something different, such as a dinner, a trip, a course, or maybe a retreat that serves to enrich your life. Remember that although you are traveling the world, you are still working and you deserve it, so make yourself a nice gift.

If you don’t want to give yourself a gift, you can always get something for your family or friends from an online store.

PS: Remember to organize this on time, because the delivery companies are usually very busy during the Christmas holidays.

It seems logical, but it might not be easy for everyone. Having a positive mindset helps to bridge the gap and not suffer from loneliness.

Ok, it’s Christmas, your whole family is gathered under the same roof and you’re not there, but is this really something you can’t absolutely miss?

Remember that you are travelling the world while working, you are living your dream and yes you are very lucky to do what you love. So just remind yourself once in a while and you will be fine.

In the end, it is only a few days in the year that you can be alone or with new people that you might have just met a few minutes ago.

Also, if you have missed Christmas too much, you can always organize a second Christmas when you come back home. Stay positive and life will give you incredible moments. Remember to enjoy the moment and think that the best is yet to come. Christmas digital nomad post
