Copenhagen’s 5 Best Food Markets for Foodies
Today I want to share a bit about the food markets you absolutely have to visit in Copenhagen, especially if you’re a foodie like me.
Although I’ll admit, trying to sum up the culinary scene of this city in just one post is a bit of a challenge; however, I’ll give it my best shot.

INTRODUCTION
Copenhagen is a fantastic city, it reminds me a little of Amsterdam, but with its own Danish style. And when it comes to food, there’s no doubt it’s one of the top culinary destinations in the world.
Besides being home to some of the most famous restaurants in the world (like Geranium, Noma, or Alchemist, to name just a few), it also offers tons of great places to eat, both local and international, that make Copenhagen a true food paradise.
Among these are the food markets in Copenhagen, where you can find anything you can imagine: traditional Danish dishes, great coffee and desserts, and international cuisine that’s hard to come by even in other European capitals.
In my opinion, these food markets exist not just to attract tourists, but also for a more local reason. I say this with almost total certainty, Danes are known for wanting to eat well, enjoy their free time, and spend quality moments with friends and family.
And these food markets in Copenhagen bring all those things together perfectly.
I’ll be heading back to explore more of them soon, but I want to leave you with something interesting: do you know that everything I’ve described above, when it comes to Denmark, can be summed up in just one word?
That word is Hygge.
Even though Hygge isn’t strictly about food, it definitely has a strong connection to it. Hygge is more of a feeling, a way of life, it’s about comfort, well-being, and enjoying the moment. And food, at least in my view, plays a huge role in that sense of comfort and connection.
I really love this concept and the way Danes embrace life. I believe that food markets are the perfect embodiment of everything that Hygge represents.
Now, back to the markets, and given the wide variety available, in this article I’m going to round up all the food markets that, in my opinion, are a must-see on your next visit to Copenhagen.
Let’s see if you too can achieve this “Hygge” mood amidst the aromas, flavors, and good company of Denmark.
I hope so. 😉 Enjoy reading!
TORVEHALLERNE KBH
I’ll start with Torvehallerne, a local “gourmet” food market that’s almost impossible to miss or walk past during your visit to Copenhagen. This modern market is located in the heart of the city and it is easily recognizable thanks to its glass facades.
Divided into two pavilions (with part of it also outdoors), here you’ll find a wide variety of fresh products, from fruits and vegetables to meats and fish, pretty much everything you would expect from a local neighborhood market. On top of that most stalls also offer tastings of their products or dishes made with local ingredients that don’t get any fresher than this.
One section of the market is dedicated to pastries and coffee, as well as international food.
Personally, I was fascinated by this place: modern, clean, and with a great variety of local dishes.
In fact, I ate very well here and I had a delicious coffee… and trust me, if an Italian tells you they had a good coffee outside of Italy, it really must have been great 😉
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE TORVEHALLERNE FOOD MARKET:
Opening hours:
Torvehallerne is open all year round. While hours can vary depending on the stall, the market generally operates from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Closing season:
This market is open year-round.
TIVOLI FOOD HALL
You’ll probably recognize the name of this market because Tivoli Gardens amusement park is always on the lists, posts, and reels of things you must do or see in Copenhagen.
But did you know that right next to it, you can find a very modern food market? Yes, even though I didn’t go into the park, I visited this food market and was pleasantly surprised by the international food offerings that would make any food lover happy.
There are about 15–20 establishments in total offering a little bit of everything, from sandwiches to sushi and poke bowls, and the vibe inside is super cool.
I think the main idea behind this market was to offer a variety of food different from what’s available at the park. However, the brilliance of the creators was to keep it open to everyone, as it’s located right by the train station, making it a perfect spot for travelers and visitors.
Personally, if you love great food, I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE TIVOLI FOOD MARKET:
Opening hours:
Sunday to Thursday: 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Friday and Saturday: 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM
Closing season:
Tivoli Food Hall is open year-round, regardless of whether the park is open or not.

MEATPACKING DISTRICT: KØDBYEN
Although Kødbyen isn’t a food market in the strictest sense, I had to add it to this list because it’s definitely worth a visit.
Known to locals as Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District, Kødbyen literally means just that. It’s an old industrial area of the city that, over the years, has been renovated and transformed into a vibrant gastronomic and cultural hub.
Walking through its streets, I discovered some of the most interesting restaurants and food offerings in the city. In fact, Mika and I ate at one of the restaurants in the area, enjoying delicious Danish food, and we were also fascinated by the nightlife there.
I’ve included it in this list of food markets in Copenhagen because, although the venues are independent, you’ll find a wide range of food offerings, from classic local restaurants to more international and specialized cuisine.
For instance, in Kødbyen, I also found a franchise of what, in my opinion, is one of the best burgers in Iceland. More international than that? It’s hard to beat.
I recommend you to visit this area of the city and let yourself be carried away by its bars, restaurants, and art galleries.
You’ll surely enjoy it.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE KØDBYEN MEAT DISTRICT
Opening hours:
Kødbyen is a district with various restaurants, bars, and galleries, each with its own opening hours. Typically, the establishments open around noon and close late at night, especially on weekends.
Closing season:
Since Kødbyen is a neighborhood with multiple independent businesses, there’s no general closing season. However, it’s advisable to check the specific hours of the establishments you plan to visit.
Here in this article you will find a list of all the places where you can eat.

REFFEN STREET FOOD
The food market that any foodie would love to have is right next to your home.
I’m not exaggerating when I say that Reffen is the largest street food market in the Nordic countries, and for that reason alone, it deserves a visit.
It has over 50 food stalls offering any type of food you can imagine, and it’s located in a port area (very close to the Alkemist restaurant).
It’s a perfect place to spend time and relax with family and friends (remember the word Hygge?), because, in addition to food and drink, it offers much more, such as events, play areas, and entertainment.
On my last visit to the city, unfortunately, I couldn’t go to this market. The reason was that, being an outdoor market, it usually closes during the winter months, when temperatures and weather conditions aren’t very favorable, and it gets very cold.
Still, I advise you to always check their website, as during the winter season, the organizers host other events in different venues and establishments across the city.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE REFFEN STREET FOOD MARKET
Opening Hours:
Food Stalls: Every day from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Bars:
Monday to Thursday: 11:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Friday and Saturday: 11:00 a.m. to midnight
Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Coffee Shop: Every day from 10:30 a.m.
Closing Season:
Reffen is a seasonal market that typically closes during the winter months. For example, in 2024, it was closed until March 20th (which was the day I visited). I recommend checking their official website for up-to-date information on dates.
BROENS STREET FOOD
In my opinion, Broens is the perfect example of what a food market should be all about: great food and good vibes.
Located right in the heart of the city, just a bridge and a few steps away from one of Copenhagen’s most iconic and visited streets, this is a market you simply can’t miss.
Here, you can enjoy all kinds of gourmet international dishes and some of the best food stalls and outlets offering top-quality street food. In fact, you’ll find a branch of what I consider one of the best burger spots in town, and if you’re curious to know more, I’ve written a full article about it 😉
But that’s not all; this place really brings together the best of what an international food market can offer. It has everything: amazing food, delicious drinks, and those great vibes I keep talking about. Didn’t I say it had everything to make your day?
On my last visit (sadly), the market was closed for a few days because they were setting up the ice-skating rink.
Even so, for me, it’s a must-stop place, and it should be for you too if you’re visiting this city.
I highly recommend checking their website to stay updated on opening hours and possible closures, especially during the colder months.

As I mentioned before, just like Reffen, Broens Gadekøkken is a seasonal market and usually closes for part of the winter (though the ice rink stays open!).I recommend checking their official website for up-to-date info on dates and events.
