Street art in Sardinia – San Gavino Monrale Open-air murals museum
In our previous posts, we already mentioned Sardinia and how beautiful this island is. Paradise beaches, delicious food, and fabulous people make this island a world-famous tourist destination.
But this incredible island has much more to offer to tourists than only beaches. For this reason, we decided to write an article on a type of art which, although already well-known for years, is increasingly gaining popularity on the streets and walls of the island. We will write more deeply about the Street Art scene in Sardinia, more precisely about San Gavino Monreale and its murals.

San Gavino Monreale and Murals – Street art in Sardinia
Let’s start by talking about a small village in Sardinia, San Gavino Monreale which has recently become very popular for its street art (it is also Simone’s birthplace).
Since 2014, San Gavino Monreale has become popular for its incredible and colorful murals which nowadays count over 70 artworks which you can find almost at every corner of this village.
All these amazing murals were created in Sardinia by national and international artists. From a small village in Sardinia, San Gavino has grown into this frequently visited village with unique and colorful street art.
Read more here if you are interested in a guided tour to see all the beautiful murals in San Gavino.
You might be asking why all this street art was placed in a small village in Sardinia. Here is a bit more storytelling about why San Gavino takes an important role in the creation of these unique murals. Sometimes the good things are created from bad things or memories you prefer to forget.
If you are coming to Sardinia to visit these amazing murals, we recommend renting a car, as public transport is not very reliable. Here are our unique tips on how to rent a car on a budget.
The story behind Murals in San Gavino – Street art in Sardinia
After Simone (Skizzo) sadly passed away in 2013, a group of friends decided to meet and organize a memorial in his honor. The memorial was a successful event and his friends wanted to keep his memory alive for this reason, in 2014 the first self-financed mural in San Gavino was created by Giorgio Casu (Jorghe).
Giorgio Casu is a well-known Sardinian artist who was also a friend of Skizzo. With Giorgio’s artistic skills and the help of other friends and many other people, the first mural was created in less than 2 weeks. result of this mural was surprisingly positive for the community in San Gavino and we can say that it was the moment when the murals in San Gavino started its journey.
The beautiful gesture from Skizzo’s friends created an unexpected reaction from the people in Sardinia. More murals were popping up in San Gavino ( and also in many other villages in the area).
Nowadays (2024) we count more than 70 different murals distributed among various places and it seems there is no way to stop it (we hope it never stops).
More murals are created every single year, and San Gavino is really becoming a Mecca for street art in Sardinia amongst others like Orgosolo and San Sperate.
In 2015, one year after everything started, a huge mural portrait of Eleonora d’Arborea ( famous and powerful Sardinian heroine) was created.
Many other groups of Sardinian artists decided to express themselves in the form of murals and support the cause. Some of them were RIP/ART, Sergio Putzu, Andrea Meli, Paolo Mazzucco (Mamblo)
Also, Giorgio Casu and his friends continue to decorate the walls with his incredible murals like Don Chisciotte (2016), Kore (2017), La Pavoncella (2018) Greenland (2019) and we hope more and more to come..
Among the first artists who also created murals in San Gavino are Andrea Casciu (Siris), Crisa (Cagliari), Francesco del Casino (Siena), Erica il cane (Belluno), Spaik (Mexico) and Bastardilla (Colombia).
Over the years, new artists and groups decided to participate in the project of new murals and continue to make San Gavino a unique open-air museum.
Nowadays the murals in this village and Sardinia in general attract a large audience who is not only interested in the beautiful beaches and food. We are happy that many people come to see this extraordinary street art in Sardinia and that they discover all the beauties that this land has to offer and that they don’t stop here just for a holiday, sun, and ichnusa beer.
Skizzo Cultural Association in San Gavino – Murals in Sardinia
Skizzo Cultural Association was initially launched to keep the memory of a beloved friend.
Nowadays, it has become something else, it brought the San Gavino community together with a desire to create something beautiful and unique. In this last year, they have also opened a space, called C’entro which aims to encourage the diffusion of creative, artistic, and cultural projects.
We really hope that this idea is transferable to other parts of Sardinia and to the whole world. SHARE IT!!
We have to mention that all murals are self-financed and Skizzo Cultural Association is helping to get more funds to keep creating this unique street art in Sardinia.
We wanted to say THANK YOU to all the artists and people who participated in the creation of these extraordinary murals in San Gavino.
Here we are leaving the list of all artists who participated in this great project. Thanks to Non solo murales di San Gavino Monreale paese di artisti we could use some of the photos from their site.
