Have you ever heard of Iceland’s Diamond Circle?
The Diamond Circle, in the north of Iceland, is a fascinating route that brings together some of the most impressive natural wonders of the whole island.
This Iceland Diamond Circle is about 260 km and connects the most important points in northern Iceland. From legendary waterfalls, and dreamlike villages to volcanic landscapes, this journey has everything essential for nature and adventure lovers.
I know you’ve probably heard or read several articles about the Golden Circle, the fantastic route in the south of the island. Still, what I’m going to propose in the following lines is just as beautiful and fantastic as Golden Circle (and I speak from the experience of having seen both).
Unlike the Golden Circle in the south, which is close to the capital and easily accessible, and therefore always crowded with tourists, the Diamond Circle, for most of its attractions, can be considered very peaceful.
Both circuits are beautiful, but if you have the time, I recommend visiting both. However, if you like tranquility and discovering new things, you should keep reading this post to find out more.

Important Facts about the Diamond Circle in Iceland:
- Route: Approximately 260 km.
- Time to complete: From 1 day (quick visit) to 4 days (more detailed tour).
- Location: Northern Iceland region, connecting several unique natural attractions and the main route N1 (the ring road).

- Access: Ideal to explore by car; a 4×4 vehicle is recommended in winter or under adverse weather conditions.

GODAFOSS – The diamond circle in Iceland
Goðafoss is the first magical destination on Diamond Circle.
Also known as the “Waterfall of the Gods,” it is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, with a width of 30 meters and a drop of about 12 meters.
It is located right on the Iceland Ring Road, the main road that circles the island. It is undoubtedly a popular destination, but still worth stopping by to discover its history and take some unforgettable photos.

MYVATN LAKE – The diamond circle in Iceland
About 50 km away, you’ll find another incredible attraction that forms part of the Diamond Circle: Lake Mývatn.
What can I say about this lake? We have lived here for some time, and I can assure you it is one of the most beautiful and mystical places on the island.
That said, thinking about it now, it was also the most isolated place we’ve ever lived. Still, in the surrounding area, you’ll find an endless number of natural wonders, and the time you spend there will always feel too short.

- Hverir (geothermal area)
- Grjótagjá (hot spring cave)
- Skútustaðagígar (pseudo-volcanic craters with stunning views)
- Dimmuborgir (lava formations tours)

- Höfði (peninsula/park, panoramic promontory)
- Krafla (active volcano)
- Hverfjall (volcanic crater, one of the largest in the world)

DETTIFOSS – The diamond circle in Iceland
Continuing the Diamond Circle route heading northeast, about 70 km from Lake Mývatn, you’ll find Dettifoss, considered the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
Saying that this waterfall is a stunning natural spectacle is an understatement.
Words don’t do justice to its sheer power, but I can describe it with numbers: 44 meters in height, 100 meters in width, and an average flow rate of 193 cubic meters per second. This makes Dettifoss, as mentioned, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
It’s an absolute must-visit spot on the Diamond Circle in Iceland.
ÁSBYRGI
About 40 km from Dettifoss waterfall, part of our hearts were left behind.
This is where the Ásbyrgi Canyon is located, an incredible and magical place full of mythological stories and lush nature. The canyon is beautiful, filled with native trees and plants, and from the moment we arrived, it gave us a sense of peace and tranquility.
It’s the perfect place for hiking along its trails, relaxing, or having a nice outdoor meal. I hold this place so dearly that I’ve added it to my personal list of Iceland’s hidden gems. If you’re interested, take a look!
HÚSAVÍK
Continuing the Diamond Circle route, we arrive at Húsavík, a charming seaside village known as the whale-watching capital.
We visited this town many times, and every time, it felt a little like home, giving us positive vibes.
Besides the whale tours (and puffins), there are several trails and other attractions, like stunning geothermal hot springs located on a cliff, an unforgettable experience.
