PLACE
Skiing and snowboarding is our passion and every year we pack our luggage and we head toward our favorite skiing destination in Europe: Les 3 Valles in the French Alps.
For us, the Les 3 Vallées (The Three Valleys) located in the heart of the French Alps is not only our favourite destination for skiing but also the Top European destination to spend a few days in the snow. It is actually the world’s largest ski area with 600km of ski slopes. Les 3 Valléeshas 183 ski lifts and as it is already mentioned in the name, it consists of 3 Valleys: Saint-Bon, Allues, and Belleville.

HOW TO GET THERE – Top European destination skiing
There are a few options for transport. Most people come by car.
BY CAR
You can pack anything you need without thinking of any baggage allowance and you can bring your own food as the best accommodations are self-catering apartments or chalets. We will explain more about the food and accommodation later on in this post.
If you come by car, we recommend checking this website to plan your trip viaMichelin or using Google Maps. You can add your final destination, download a map, calculate kilometers, the price for consumption, and the highway toll. We always use it to plan our trips by car as it makes it easy for us to calculate our budget during the holidays.
Example: A trip from Barcelona to Les Menuires (in the 3 Valleys where we always stay) Updated 2024

When we were travelling from Barcelona, you had to include Insurance plus an extra fee for going to another country, in our case France. When you search for your destination, keep in mind that you should have insurance with full coverage when going to the mountain as it is not always easy to ride and you can find snow on the way.
BY PLANE
Living in Amsterdam gives us the best option to fly directly to the Chambery airport, the closest airport to The 3 Valleys located approx 112 km from Les Menuires. During the winter period, there is a weekly flight (always on Saturday) with Transavia for a good price.
Example: Flight from Amsterdam to Chambery, 1 Person/Oneway
Flight: 40 EUR (One way)
Hand Luggage: Included in the price 10kg
Checked Luggage: Depends on the weight, but it is cheaper to book online directly with the flight ticket (approx 20kg -25 EUR)
Ski or Snowboard max 15kg: 29 EUR per flight
Total price for 1 person/Oneway: 94 EUR
Note: Price may vary
Our Tip: Wise is a great card when you are travelling to a country with a different currency than yours. We use this online bank during our trips and we never had problems, even in remote places around the world.
If we compare the prices for a car and a flight, for us it is still cheaper to fly than rent a car. Again it depends on where you live and how many persons are coming. If you are 4 people, the costs of renting a car, consumption, and highway tolls divide into 4 so it might be more convenient to rent a car.
Book a flight?
To book a flight with the best price, we recommend visiting the Skyscanner website or Google flight and searching for the best flight based on your destination.
Transport to the Ski Resort
If you take a flight, you will get to Chambery airport which is located approx 112 km from Les Menuires (one of the resorts in 3 Valleys). Now, you will have to get from the airport to the ski resort.
There are two options:
Group or Family: if you are a group of people or family of at least 4 people, the best option is to rent private transport to get to the ski resort.
Less than 3 people: If you are not a big group of people like us, you can easily get a bus. Remember to book the ticket at least 48h in advance so you have a seat guaranteed. HERE you can book the tickets directly. The journey takes about 3h as you have to change the bus in the middle of the way. The price is 39 EUR per person/Oneway.

Since we go every year, we always keep the same Chalet in Reberty. We love it as it is on top of the resort and you can just take your ski or snowboard and get on the ski slope straight away.
There are many options for accommodation, however, we always recommend booking the accommodation somemonths in advance as it fills pretty quickly and you might be left with no accommodation.
We recommend searching for different accommodation platforms like Booking or Expedia to find the most suitable accommodation for you and your family. As we mentioned before, most of the accommodations are self-cateringapartmentsor chalets so if you go by car, you can bring your own food. There are also a few hotels available with restaurants but we never used this option.
TIP:If you come by car, we recommend buying food before you get to the ski resort as it is cheaper. There is one big supermarket in Moutiers where you buy local products. In France, you find delicious cheese, wine, fuet, and pate.
As mentioned before The Three Valley ski area is the world’s largest ski area with 600km of ski slopes. We always stay in one of the Valleys, Les Menuires which is part of the Belleville valley. Les Menuires is our base and from there we go to all other areas depending on the snow and weather conditions.
